New DUI laws taking effect July 1

If you are convicted of driving under the influence in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Alameda or Tulare counties after July 1 you will have to install an ignition interlock device on your car. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the bill into law stating his hopes to deter driving under the influence. Those convicted of first offense DUIs out of the pilot counties after July 1 will have to install a device which requires you to blow into a tube in order for the car to start. This test program is slated to last through 2015 and will be evaluated at that time. The cost of installing the ignition interlock device will be $75 or more with monthly maintenance fees of $50 or more. Most people will have to pay full cost with some exceptions for low income clients. If you have been arrested in one of the pilot counties you are likely going to be subject to this new law. The harsh ignition interlock requirement on first offenders is required for 5 months and for a second offender 12 months.
